This degree gives students a recognized pathway to a higher degree by research. It is designed to enhance students' ability to promote professional midwifery and to lead and achieve in their chosen field. Midwifery in contemporary health care requires professionals who are highly trained, technically competent and capable of identifying problems and applying research methods in a practice environment.
The Honours degree produces early career midwives with the research, critical thinking and decision making skills to influence future clinical practice, which benefits the needs of the individuals and the community.
The course consists of a supervised research project that provides a great opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of an area of interest and prepare you for the rapid career advancement as an advanced practitioner or for further study as a researcher.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must have completed a Bachelor of Midwifery, Bachelor of Nursing/bachelor of Midwifery at Monash University, or a comparable undergraduate qualification in midwifery from another approved tertiary institution; and A combined average of 70% or higher for semesters three, four, five and six of the Bachelor of Midwifery, or equivalent performance in the final two years of midwifery degree from another tertiary institution.
Minimum entrance requirements
Applicants must have a Bachelor of Nursing with honours 1 or honours 2A or hold qualifications deemed equivalent by the faculty board.
Students who have completed the course will demonstrate a thorough understanding of relevant research techniques in their field through a review of the relevant literature. They will demonstrate their ability, under supervision to apply relevant research techniques to their chosen field of study. Students will be able to present high-quality written work suitable for publication in appropriate scholarly journals, and be able to critically evaluate both their own and others' written work in their chosen field.
Students will also be able to:
•identify and define research questions
•identify the appropriate research methods to address the research questions
•demonstrate mastery of their chosen research methodology/methodologies
•demonstrate theoretical knowledge at masters level in their chosen field of nursing and midwifery
•communicate their research findings in a format appropriate to their academic discipline
•write up their research into a high quality thesis
•contribute new information or new ways of understanding information in the field of nursing and midwifery.
The course prepares candidates for positions of leadership roles and positions of responsibility in the health care system. Graduates are often employed in a wide range of senior positions in health care and in educational settings.
