Nursing provides valued service to communities in the provision of health care and promotion of health and wellbeing. This course offers hands on clinical experience in both rural and metropolitan hospitals in Victoria. Graduates have job opportunities in a diverse range of employment settings.

The Bachelor of Nursing provides students with the knowledge and clinical skills to provide high quality nursing care. Graduate nurses are skilled in problem solving and clinical reasoning; competent and safe in the practice of clinical nursing skills and able to work within legal and ethical standards of practice.

The course consists of six semesters. Clinical nursing experience will be undertaken in years 1-3. This is a major component of the course and requires placement in a variety of health care settings. Travel to clinical placements will be required.

Graduates are eligable to register as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

  • Equivalent Australian Yr 12.
Minimum entrance requirements for non-school leavers.
  • TAFE - selection of applicants will be based on academic results. Students who succesfully complete a TAFE Certificate IV in Health (Nursing) may apply for credit for up to 24 credit points in the first year of the course. Students who have successfully completed a TAFE Diploma of Nurisng may apply for credit for up to 48 points in the course, potentially enabling them to complete the degree in two years. All credit applications will be individually assessed, based on academic results. Unscored or ungraded TAFE qualifications will not be considered for entry.
  • University - Students who have completed or commenced other university courses may also be considered for credit. All credit applications are individually assessed. Applicants may undertake two single units from the Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Midwifery to meet minimum entry requirements, however additional units may enhance their chances of selection. There are no compulsory units, however science units from the Bachelor of Nursing are recommended. Applicants undertaking single units may apply for credit on admission. Alternatively, applicants may undertake units through Open University Australia.
  • Bridging courses - A one-year, full-time Diploma of Tertiary Studies is offered through the Monash University Peninsula Campus. Applicants seeking entry via this pathway must demonstrate successful completion of all units and minimum of a credit average over the course.
  • VCE prerequisites - Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of General Mathematics or Maths: Mathematical Methods or Units 3 and 4: any Mathematics; and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.
  • International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites - A score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL, and succesful completion of any mathematics subject.

This course requires students to undertake off-campus clinical placements. In the clinical setting students will have an opportunity to apply theory to practice under supervision. Attendance is mandatory for the clinical component of each unit. All students in this course will be required to attend a variety of clinical placements including mental health placements. Travel to metropolitan and rural sites may be required.

Clinical placements begin in the first year of the degree and will increase in duration and complexity as the student progresses. Generally speaking, students on clinical experience will take on shift work, including weekend shifts and night duty and work a supervised, unpaid 40 hour week. Make-up for time missed will be arranged in consultation with the clinical coordinator and unit coordinator on receipt of a medical certificate or other acceptable documentation.

A student may be denied access to or withdrawn from a clinical practicum if required skills and knowledge are deemed inadequate, or on other grounds deemed appropriate by the head of school.
