Pharmaceutical science plays a vital role in improving human health by translating advances in medical research into medicines. This job-ready science degree will equip students with the necessary skills to work in industry or research.

A pharmaceutical scientist researches and develops reliable, accessible and effective treatments for patients. Pharmaceutical scientists can also work in other industries such as cosmetics, chemicals, agricultural and food products. Students gain real-world skills through either a research project or an industrial experience placement.

The Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science is centred around the chemical and biological sciences. It provides students with the knowledge and skills base in the pharmaceutical sciences to develop exciting careers in research and industry. Students in the course have the opportunity to interact with world class research groups and be trained in the laboratories of the Monash Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences, which are equipped with cutting-edge instrumentation and infrastructure.

The Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science has three major areas of study:

  • Formulation science explores inventing, making and testing new products in fields such as pharmaceuticals, food and cosmetics
  • Medicinal chemistry aims to produce graduates with an in-depth understanding of the principles and techniques behind drug discovery and development
  • Drug discovery biology focuses on the discovery and understanding of biological drug targets, and their modulation by chemicals and other substances.
Minimum entrance requirements
  • Equivalent Australian Year 12.
VCE prerequisites
  • Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 35 in English (ESL) or 30 in any other English, and a study score of at least 30 in chemistry and mathematical methods (CAS).
International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites
  • A score of at least 5 in English SL or 4 in English HL or 6 in English B SL or 5 in English B HL, and
  • A score of at least 5 in chemistry SL or 4 in chemistry HL, and
  • A score of at least 5 in mathematics SL or 4 in mathematics HL.
