The Nurse Practitioner role is becoming an increasingly important and valued function throughout Australia. Nurse Practitioners work autonomously in advanced and extended roles in hospitals and a variety of community settings in collaboration with a range of other health care professional teams.

As a Nurse Practitioner you will have an advanced understanding of health assessment, diagnostics, pharmacology and clinical decision making in order to provide holistic care to patients within your particular scope of practice. Nurse Practitioners may be involved in, among many other things, making direct referrals of patients to other health care professionals, prescribing medication, and or ordering diagnostic investigations.

Professional Recognitions
This degree provides the relevant requirements for endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Entry Requirements

  • Completed Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent degree and successful completion of postgraduate award in a relevant specialty area (Graduate certificate or equivalent).
  • Current nursing registration with AHPRA Minimum of 5 years (FTE) nursing experience following initial registration, including 3 years FTE in a specialty practice area and 1 year FTE at an advanced practice level.
  • Written evidence of employer support for extended clinical practice within the workplace.
  • Recognition as an advanced practice nurse within a specialised field of practice.
  • Evidence of professional activity, including but not limited to: Membership of professional organisations Ongoing professional development activities

Nursing offers excellent and varied career prospects, both in Australia and internationally. A nurse may choose to work in a tertiary or community hospital, a community clinic or mental health service, in home-based nursing or in an extended care rehabilitation centre. Graduates can also choose further study to become clinical nurse specialists or develop careers as educators, managers and researchers.
