The first public airing of more than 3700 patient views on cancer facilities has shown eight out of 10 describe their treatment as very good, and 99 per cent are satisfied with their care.

The Cancer Institute NSW and Bureau of Health Information surveyed current and former public hospital cancer patients on their views of outpatient services such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery.

The findings, released on Wednesday, show regional centres led the state in patient satisfaction, with Lismore, Orange and Campbelltown facilities outclassing their big city counterparts in several key areas.

The much celebrated and well-funded Chris O'Brien Lifehouse centre in Sydney, created to be a centre of excellence in cancer treatment, scored lower than other facilities in terms of positivity and patient participation in care.

Patients in Bankstown-Lidicombe were significantly less satisfied with their experience than in the rest of the state.

The report will be used to address areas of concerns from patients, mainly in regard to patient input into treatment plans.

""Whilst this report paints a largely positive picture of the experiences of people with cancer in the NSW health system, it also offers us the opportunity to identify what we can do better as reported by those people who matter most: our patients," said Cancer Institute NSW CEO Professor David Currow in a statement.

Cancer remains a huge public health problem, with one in two Australian men and one in three Australian women expected to be diagnosed before they turn 85, according to the Cancer Institute NSW.
