Nurses will also get an increased professional development allowance, cheaper car parking at hospitals and free public transport.

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation said the agreement protected and extended wages and conditions over the coming years.

"This agreement positions nursing and midwifery well at a time when we need to attract and retain as many people within the professions as possible," SA branch chief executive Elizabeth Dabars said.

Health Minister Chris Picton said the deal recognised the invaluable contribution of nurses and midwives.

"We know how busy our health system has been and it's important hardworking staff continue to be supported," he said.

"Our government is committed to recruiting and retaining hundreds more nurses and this deal will provide certainty for frontline workers."
