South Australia will consider lifting its mask mandate for high school students with Premier Peter Malinauskas hoping the COVID-19 restriction can go.

The state's Emergency Management Council meets on Tuesday with the mask requirement for secondary students among a number of issues to be considered.

Mr Malinauskas said the meeting would weigh up the competing variables, including the health advice.

He said SA's current coronavirus case numbers were largely in line with expectations.

"I would like to lift the mask mandate in high schools tomorrow. I think it's difficult for students to be learning in that environment," the premier told reporters on Monday.

"So if we can lift it in a safe way that would be a good thing.

"Any decision we do make will be done in concert with the health advice."

Under the current rules, the mask mandate for high schools was maintained for at least the first four weeks of term two, a period which comes to an end this week.

Compulsory masks were dropped in primary schools at the end of term one, though they are still recommended.

SA reported another 3127 new COVID-19 infections on Monday taking the state's seven-day average to 3641.

Daily numbers have remained relatively stable over the past month following a pattern of rising mid-week and falling on weekends, probably the result of increased testing on weekdays.
