A mother-of-two has died on the Sunshine Coast after contracting meningococcal disease.

The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service says the woman, 37, was admitted to hospital on Friday and died on Sunday.

She was a Noosa council employee and was at work when she fell ill.

The woman's family will be given antibiotics to mitigate the risk of contracting the disease.

Her colleagues have been advised to seek medical help if they experience symptoms.

Public health physician Dr Andrew Langley says this is the first case of meningococcal in the region this year.

Six cases were reported to the Sunshine Coast public health unit in 2014.
