The Public Health Information Development Unit (PHIDU), funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health to promote and manage the collection, dissemination and utilisation of national, state and local data for public health purposes, has joined Torrens University Australia and will now be known as the PHIDU at Torrens University Australia.
“The PHIDU has been particularly focussed on the use of small area public health statistics and an online interactive website with accompanying maps, data and graphics to assist the Department of Health in ensuring it concentrates on prevention to minimise the incidence of mortality, illness and injury,” said Professor John Glover, Director, PHIDU at Torrens University Australia.

“The PHIDU is delighted to join Torrens University Australia on campus and the Unit is a great complement to the University’s Health courses both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The research aims of the University include a commitment to advance knowledge that positively contributes to social justice and wellbeing, improved health outcomes, provision of quality education, strong policy and governance systems, economic prosperity, social transformation, social cohesion and international development, aligning very well with the objectives of the PHIDU” added Professor Glover.
The PHIDU, established in 1999, has a proven track record of providing high quality, accessible information about health and its associated determinants to a range of users both within Australia and overseas. The Unit’s data repositories, analyses, publications, mapping and other technical tools will be of great use to students of Torrens University’s public health teaching and research courses. The Unit is best known for its social health atlases of Australia which were pioneered by Professor Glover in the 1990s.
